U.S. farmers risk losing Africa's booming ag market to China's trade dominance

Farm Progress

Milk production keeps climbing—February output up again across 24 major states, adding supply pressure when you're already watching margins. Cotton growers facing another tough year with high input costs and interest rates squeezing returns. If you're diversified or considering livestock, check current market reports and USDA disaster relief programs for wildfire-affected areas in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Auctions

Four bull sales land same day (March 22, 2026)—Brenham TX, Guttenberg IA, Pipestone MN, and Bloomington WI. Angus and Red Angus bloodlines across the board. If you're buying breeding stock this spring, you'll need to pick your sale or trailer longer distances; don't assume one catalog's got your genetics.

Market Prices

Livestock as of 03/20/2026 (USDA daily)

DAILY CATTLE (/ CWT) $297.83
DAILY HOGS (/ CWT) $91.29
CORN (/ BU) $4.10 ↓4.4% YoY
SOYBEANS (/ BU) $10.30 ↑3.0% YoY
WHEAT (/ BU) $5.01 ↓9.2% YoY
HAY (/ TON) $131.00 ↓9.0% YoY

Grants & Funding

No grants here apply directly to individual farmers or ranchers—these target utilities, nonprofits, tribes, and government bodies. The Community Facilities program may indirectly help if your area gets disaster repair funding, but you won't be the applicant. Check with your county or township if infrastructure near your operation was damaged.

Recent USDA Awards

Lincoln County pulled $191M for watershed work—largest single award out there. Boll weevil eradication and wildfire defense grants are moving money now ($8M and $8.7M respectively). Worth checking if your county qualifies for any of these programs; most require application before funds run dry.

Subsidy Payments

$16.2 billion in farm subsidies flowed nationally last year, with top counties in Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska taking the biggest shares. Mid-size operations in commodity counties may see 15-40% of net income from program payments. Check your county's average to see where you stand against neighbors.

Drought Status

Severe drought now covers 31% of U.S. farmland—your operation may qualify for USDA Loss of Profits (LFP) assistance if you're in affected counties. Check your FSA office before the signup window closes; eligibility hinges on documented yield loss and your local drought classification. Crop insurance payouts depend on your coverage level and how drought maps your specific fields.
